Il Cavaliere del Mare marks Morghan’s debut as a filmmaker. Conceived, shot and directed in Amantea, Calabria, during the 2023 Kino Guarimba Film Residency, the film is a contemporary adaptation of J.M. Synge’s Riders to the Sea.

Relocating Synge’s tragedy to Southern Italy, the film reflects on a generation growing up in economically abandoned regions of Europe: places shaped by EU funding, broken promises, and the quiet violence of brain flight. Here, the sea no longer only takes lives; it takes futures. Young people leave, not out of desire, but out of necessity.

All roles were cast with local non-professional actors - a deliberate choice rooted in Morghan’s commitment to socially engaged artmaking and community inclusion. Il Cavaliere del Mare is both an homage and a rupture: a film about inheritance, loss, and the cost of survival in contemporary Europe.
