EGON
Premiere: February 13th 2023
EGON is an original biographical play on Viennese modernist painter Egon Schiele. His art has been described as porn, erotic, raw, revolutionary, psychological, distasteful, and above all: sexual. There is no doubt that sex sells, but why and how did Schiele become the most polarizing artist of the 20th century? And now, more than 100 years later, why do nudity, eroticism, porn and sex still seem to vanish in the realms of too risqué to talk about it?
And risqué Schiele is: He fell in love with his sister, ran away with his mistress, cheated on his wife and painted them all. In this production, however, the women of his paintings don’t remain silent and a thing to stare at, instead we are giving them voices and their stories to tell. Following Schiele’s many love affairs, obsessive behaviour, alcohol consumption and his on-going fight with high society, the play examines the turn-of-the-century male gaze. Sex sells, yes - but at what cost?
